Mivi Conquer Wireless review: Affordable Bluetooth earphones for bass heads:

Bluetooth headsets are a dime a dozen these days and the demand for them has been growing as more and more phone manufacturers ditch the old 3.5mm headphone jack. While companies like Bose and JBL take care of the high-end segment, we have brands like Sennheiser, Skullcandy, and 1More that look to offer consumers affordable, low-end wireless headsets. Accessories maker Mivi is one of the newer brands to enter the headphones games. After launching the affordable Thuderbeats wireless earphones last year, the company now offers the Mivi Conquer Wireless in-ear headphones.

The Mivi Conquer are priced at Rs 3299 and can be found on e-commerce platforms like Amazon India and Flipkart. The earphones are a few hundred rupees more than the Thunderbeats and come with a slightly different design language as well that aims to attract fitness enthusiasts. Much like the Thunderbeats, the Conquer also aims to offer an affordable wireless sound that is bass-forward. Here is my review of the Mivi Conquer.

The Mivi Conquer features angular earbuds connected to the chamber that houses the drivers. The chamber lies on top of a larger plastic base which is where the battery resides. The outside of the base has the Mivi logo inscribed within a circular metal plate. Interestingly, the Conquer doesn't come with magnetic locks like the Thunderbeats, which is disappointing considering you're paying a little more for the former. It also has a lot more plastic in general than the Thunderbeats, which is again quite surprising.

The base of the Conquer is connected to the wire on one side and over-the-ear hook on the other. The inline controller features volume buttons on either side of a multipurpose button that turns the earphones off and on, allows you to connect to Bluetooth devices, answer calls and call the last dialed number by double pressing it.

Bluetooth earphones like the 1More iBFree look a lot more premium and attractive for the same price point. The Conquer supports Bluetooth 4.1 that allows up to 30 feet range as well as Qualcomm aptX codec that will offer higher quality audio and sync with devices like the OnePlus 5T that also support aptX. Overall, the Conquer doesn't provide an attractive look and is a lot more underwhelming than the Thunderbeats in this aspect.

Personally, I find in-ear headphones with over-ear hooks to be slightly problematic and annoying to wear. For one thing, they aren't the easiest or quickest to put on as compared to the simple plug-in earbuds. The over-ear hooks are meant to prevent the earphones from falling off, which works especially when running. The wired cable that goes around the neck adds to the stability. For people who don't mind the hooks, I would say that they are pretty comfortable and firm to keep on for a couple of hours at a stretch and will please fitness enthusiasts.

Overall, the Conquer doesn't provide an attractive look and is a lot more underwhelming than the Thunderbeats

The earbuds provided aren't the softest that you can find and you'll start to notice that after about an hour or so. You get two additional pairs of earbuds along with a little case to keep the earphones in. Because the earphones are connected by a wire, I found that they often lose balance as the wire shifts from one side of the neck to another, especially while running or working out. This ends up pulling the earbuds down which can get quite annoying. You will also feel a pull if you turn your head to the left or right, so you're going to want to keep your head straight most of the time when wearing them. I feel the wire could have been slightly longer to maintain balance, especially for outdoor activities.

There is still a ways to go before Bluetooth headphones produce the kind of sounds that are delivered only through wired headphones. The more expensive one do a decent job at it but we are yet to see great sounding pair of wireless audio products in the budget segment. As far as sound performance goes, the Mivi Conquer will not blow your mind, but they will please bassheads looking for a cheap pair of wireless earphones. The Conquer gives off a punchy bassline, which is arguably its biggest draw, but that is usually at the expense of mids.

Vocals can sometimes drown out, especially in songs like Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran while the highs are pronounced. The soundstage is minimal so you won't find a lot of detail among various instruments playing in the background. This is mostly true for songs like Dancing Nancies by Dave Matthews Band where multiple instruments are in play. The instruments sound too close together, which reduces clarity. With these songs, vocals sound muted while the instruments sound cluttered and lack distinction. You do get a bit more clarity with FLAC, but then again the format is not easily accessible.

All in all, the earphones are likely to please bassheads, but that's about it
I found that the earphones are best suited for R&B and Hip-Hop genres that heavily rely on bass sound signatures. When it comes to Rock, Jazz, and genres that involve a lot of instrumentation, the Conquer lacks clarity and detail. All in all, the earphones are likely to please bassheads, but that's about it.

The Mivi Conquer comes with passive noise canceling, which means that the earphones are not going to block out external noise all that well. One of the more impressive aspects to see at this price point is that the earphones come with Qualcomm apt support which means you're likely to get more seamless and lag-free connectivity with apex supported devices like the OnePlus 5T.

The Mivi Conquer promises to deliver around 10 hours of battery life on average volume level. This is largely true as I got about 7 to 8 hours when playing music at above-average volume levels, which is fairly good for wireless earphones of this size. The earphones can get pretty loud and pitchy at high levels so most users are going to prefer keeping the volume level somewhere near the middle, which means you should get about 4 days of battery life with about 2 hours of listening time per day.

The earphones take about an hour and a half to charge from zero to full via the Micro-USB port. Overall, the battery life is decent for wireless earphones but nothing exceptional. The USB port can be seen on the side of the in-line controller with a flap that helps protect it from sweat.
Should you buy the Mivi Conquer wireless earphones?

Bluetooth headphones at a budget price point are not going to deliver exceptional sound across genres. They will most likely target a specific point - either bass-heavy or focussed mids. The Mivi Conquer focuses more on the former and delivers good lows for bass heads. The highs are loud but lack clarity and soundstage. Overall, the in-ear headphones are decent and well worth the asking price.

At this price point, there aren't too many wireless earphones that one can boast of. The Mivi Conquer will be compared to the likes of 1More iBFree that is priced around Rs 3,999. For a little bit more, the iBFree offers a more premium-looking pair of wireless earphones and offers a slightly better sound range. That being said, the Mivi Conquer offers just enough for those looking for budget Bluetooth earphones.
